This year is officially the deadliest year in Oakland since 2006 as the Saturday shooting victim died in hospital Tuesday morning

Oakland, California – It’s now official, 2021 is the deadliest year in Oakland since 2006. The record number was reached Tuesday morning when the Saturday’s shooting victim died in hospital.

According to the incident report, local police responded at the scene to the 3100 block of Parker Avenue, near Overlook Avenue in East Oakland, in the early morning hours around 2:30 a.m. after a ShotSpotter alert.

When they arrived at the scene, they found one shooting victim suffering at least one gunshot wound. He was immediately transferred to hospital where he was treated until around noon on Tuesday when he was pronounced dead. The victim was identified as the 23-year-old Richard Rogers.

The police don’t have a shooting suspect at this point of the investigation and no arrests were made so far. The investigation about the case continues.

According to the latest data, 2021 is the deadliest year in Oakland since 2006. Rogers’ death marks the 132nd death being investigated as a homicide by Oakland police this year. For a comparison, in 2006 a total of 148 people were killed.

The California Highway Patrol is also investigating five fatal shootings on Oakland freeways this year. Last year Oakland police investigated 109 homicides.
