California recognizes Women’s Military History Week to celebrate the resilience and bravery of female service members from the Revolutionary War to the present day
Sacramento, California – Governor Gavin Newsom of California has officially designated March 17 to March 23, 2025, as Women’s Military History Week. This special observance aims to honor the significant contributions and sacrifices made by women in the military throughout American history.
The governor’s proclamation acknowledges the enduring strength and resilience shown by women from the Revolutionary War era to the present day. Despite being unrecognized officially in the early days of the country’s military history, women have consistently demonstrated bravery and dedication across various branches of the armed forces.
Highlighting a key moment, the proclamation mentions World War II as a pivotal era with the establishment of the Women’s Army Corps. It also celebrates the groundbreaking 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, an all-Black, all-woman unit responsible for ensuring that troops on the front lines received crucial correspondence. These milestones were crucial in paving the way toward the complete integration of women into all roles within the military, including combat positions.
The governor’s statement proudly references several contemporary heroes who exemplify the diverse legacy of women in the military. Notables include U.S. Army Sergeant Sagen Maddalena, who clinched a silver medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics, and Captain Sage Fox, recognized as the first transgender soldier to serve openly in the military. Another distinguished mention is Lindsey Sin, a veteran and the current Secretary of California’s Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet), who has also made significant contributions.
The proclamation comes at a critical time when segments of military history are being marginalized. By declaring Women’s Military History Week, Governor Newsom seeks to ensure that the heroic efforts of women are acknowledged and celebrated. This initiative also reinforces California’s commitment to diversity and equality within the military, ensuring that all servicemembers, regardless of gender, receive the recognition and opportunities they deserve.
The observance of Women’s Military History Week not only serves as a tribute to the past achievements and sacrifices of women but also as a reaffirmation of the state’s commitment to an inclusive and equitable military environment. The stories of these servicewomen are set to inspire future generations and underscore the significant role that diversity plays in strengthening the U.S. Armed Forces.
