Contra Costa County residents have until July 12 to apply for the 10-week Fall Community Academy in Martinez

Martinez, California – This fall citizens of Contra Costa County seeking an immersive experience in the operations of the criminal justice system have a special chance to try themselves in the field. Applications for Martinez’s 2024 Fall Community Academy are being accepted by the District Attorney’s Office. Beginning on August 28th, this free, 10-week instructional program runs every Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

The Community Academy seeks to give a whole picture of the criminal justice system. From the investigative phases to prosecution and victim assistance, participants will interact directly with deputy district attorneys, investigators, and victim advocates, therefore acquiring understanding of the complexity of case filing.

Diana Becton, the district attorney, underlined how the initiative helps to promote openness and understanding between the society and the court system.

“Communication is a cornerstone of a strong community,” District Attorney Diana Becton noted. “I’m committed to keeping the public informed about our role in the criminal justice system and the Community Academy is a key initiative in this effort. Through this interactive engagement with our participants, we’ve been able to make great strides in building stronger relations between our office and the public we serve.”

Tours of the Martinez Detention Facility, chances to meet with a Superior Court judge, and seminars covering the office’s several outreach projects targeted at victims, parents, and children are some of the activities part of the program. These practical interactions are meant to provide participants a real-world knowledge of the Contra Costa County criminal court system.
